"V6 or Bust" (j-turn)

Long story short, my car lost a lot of oil. The leak is plugged. I have half a quart in the trunk, but it’s lost probably over a quart. The oil light never turned on. I have to get it 2 miles home. Is it better to keep the revs down and go slow, or go a bit quicker and get the revs a bit higher? Should I shut off all of the accessories? (A/C) Any random advice?

If you top it off with what you have, where does that get the level to, as shown on the dipstick?

I’d have it towed. The engine could seize up in those two miles.

I’m going to do that and look, if it’s at or very close to the low line, I’m driving home.

You’re fine if it’s within range. According to your post, it sounds like it’s only down half a quart. That’s nothing.
But check the dipstick anyway. Don’t guess.

Check your oil level, add as much oil as you can. If there’s oil showing on the dipstick, then you’re good to drive home normally. If not, try to get more oil if you can, otherwise keep your revs lowish (but don’t lug the engine) and watch your oil pressure.

If it’s registering on the dipstick its completely fine drive as normal. Id take it easy and just limp it home if it is really low and you have no other option (ie getting a tow).

A quart low isn’t going to matter because you still have plenty in the heads & sump — your capacity has enough margin to keep the pickup from running dry when you take a high speed corner. But if you were significantly low, keeping your revs & speed down would be the way to go, and accessories wouldn’t matter.
(I’m guessing you’re thinking about the extra couple hundred revs, but that’s at idle with no load...revving it out adds significantly more stress).

Yep, also consider you only have to get 2 miles. avoid high rpm and as long as you have SOME oil, you should be ok. Low oil PSI/no oil+long period of use or strenuous use is what kills.

Depends on where the leak is. If it’s in the top end, revs will accellerate the leak. If it’s in the bottom end you’ll lose oil no matter what due to gravity.

So you lost a quart, but have half a quart for net loss of .5qt?
You’re fine. My Montero’s valve cover gaskets are shot and I wait until it knocks at idle to add more.
